The Merchant Marine primarily transports cargo and passengers during peacetime; in times of war, the Merchant Marine can be an auxiliary to the United States Navy, and can be called upon to deliver military personnel and materiel for the military. Merchant Marine officers may also be commissioned as military officers by the Department of Defense.
REAR ADMIRAL SUSAN “SUE” L. DUNLAP, USMS
Rear Admiral Dunlap is a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She attended Northwestern University on an NROTC scholarship and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature in 1984. She is a graduate of the Naval War College, where she earned her Master’s Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies with a single area focus on Africa and she also earned a Master’s degree in Computer Science from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. She was a distinguished graduate of the Surface Warfare Officers School Basic Course, and her initial assignment was to USS CANOPUS (AS-34), where she served as Navigator and Auxiliaries Officer.
