"Production of Aladdin"
The
American Ballet Russe, and the Great Neck School of Dance are proud to
announce their upcoming production of Aladdin: The Ballet, to be
performed at the Landmark on Main Street Jeanne Rimsky Theater in Port
Washington at 3:00 pm Saturday and Sunday, February 11 and 12.
Using the Silk Road setting from the original 1001 Arabian Nights,
Aladdin will be a Pan Asian ballet intended for a family audience which
will combine Central, South and East Asian, Middle Eastern and African
dance styles with classical ballet. With a score comprised of Russian
Orientalist music (especially Rimsky-Korsakov and Glazounov) and a
multi-generational, multi-ethnic cast including students from the Great
Neck School of Dance and professional dancers from New York City, the
ballet will feature a carpet ride which visits the animal creatures from
several Southern lands, encouraging global awareness and multi-cultural
appreciation and unity while promoting ballet as an accessible and
understandable art form. In addition, the familiar story portrays a
protagonist (Aladdin) as someone of ambiguous central Asian origin
(Iran/Iraq/Afghanistan/Pakistan/Uzbek/Kazakh/Kurd) which helps to put a
human face on the people so much in the news today.
“ In my experience of running the Great Neck School of Dance for 30
years, I’ve come to realize that most children have never seen a
classical ballet, except for The Nutcracker” notes Roberta Senn,
artistic director of the American Ballet Russe and the Great Neck School
of Dance. “Aladdin is the perfect choice to introduce children to
classical ballet. Since it was made popular by Disney, it will appeal to
boys as well as girls”.
The American Ballet Russe is a Long Island based classical ballet
company founded in 1991. Composed of outstanding dancers from the
world’s best ballet companies, it is dedicated to educating the public
in the appreciation of ballet. The American Ballet Russe is truly a
community project. In Aladdin there will be 40 children dancing. They
come from communities all over Long Island including Great Neck, Little
Neck, Douglaston, Manhasset, Port Washington, Bayside and Flushing.
